Bus station opens doors to stray dogs so they have a warm place to sleep
The fall and winter season is the first sign of the holidays for some and the beginning of others’ tough times.
Skytales reports that while the holiday is such an incredible time for family and friends, others know it’s the beginning of the cold and difficult seasons. The homeless community especially feels the shift in seasons.
Having a warm place to sleep often makes all the difference. For those who sleep on the streets, fall and winter are all about eeking out a living and doing their best to stay warm. Even besides humans, the first signs of winter trigger other animals’ instincts to find places to stay warm.
While many humans can find refuge in homeless shelters and programs during the cold months, dogs often don’t have those things available to them. Thankfully, one bus station in Brazil took matters into their own hands.
Instead of passively watching dozens of stray dogs look for places to sleep at night, this bus station threw open its doors for them! At night, when the temperature drops, the Barreirinha bus station allows any stray dog to come into the warmth and spend a toasty night hidden from the freezing cold! While this was a kind gesture, it wasn’t even the beginning of the story.
Some people’s hearts go out to animals when they see them suffering. The workers at the bus station must have been that kind of gentle-hearted individual.
After opening up their doors for the dogs, they knew they could do more. Deciding upon it, they brought out beds and blankets each night for the dogs to sleep on! After a few weeks of doing this, the bus workers found a few regulars.
A few weeks in, the bus workers saw a few dogs who, without fail, showed up every night. Naming them Max, Pitoco, and Zoinho, the little dogs became a local sensation!
Fabiane Rosa, a local politician, saw the dogs one day and was astounded. One day, walking by the bus station, Fabiane noticed the pups all snuggled up in their little blanket bundles and couldn’t help but take a picture. Posting it to Facebook, the photos soon went viral! People across the world loved seeing the kindness of the humans (and the cuteness of the dogs)! In her post, she congratulated the bus station staff.
With a well-deserved shout-out, Fabiana said to the workers:
“Congratulations to the terminal staff, everyone understands that these angels are there and have a right to be. So many companies in Curitiba could follow this example, adopting a pet. Of course it is not the ideal, but at least there are those who are looking after them.”
Since then, dogs have been spending the night at the bus station!
Ever since that moment of kindness, the dogs have had nightly “sleep-overs” with the bus crew. To the humans, it was a small part of their day. To the dogs, it was the kindest thing anyone had ever done for them.
