While many Brits are soaking up the sun, our furry friends are not always such big fans.
Taking your pooch out when it’s hot is not advised, but thankfully, there’s a handy way you can check if temperatures are too high.
With temperatures soaring in parts of the UK, experts have urged dog owners to carry out a quick check before letting their pets into the garden.
While the temperature cut off for walking your dog in the heat is more clear cut, there’s an easy hack for checking if the your garden is too hot for your pup.
From patio slabs to artificial grass, the five-second touch test tells you if an outdoor surface is a sufficient temperature for your pet’s paws.
Artificial grass specialists at Grass247 paired up with Dr Linda Simon, Resident Vet at Pooch & Mutt to highlight this handy check.
“Owners need to be aware that artificial grass does not act like real grass, and can heat up quickly to much higher temperatures,” the pet expert said.
She explained that this can lead to your pet burning their paw pads.
“It is important to continually check the temperature of the grass, so lay your palm flat on it for five seconds,” Dr Linda said.
“If this is uncomfortable, your dog should not be walking on it.”
James Higgins from Grass247 recommended watering your garden’s surfaces and adding shade where possible to make the space more warm weather-friendly for your pet.
Pet experts recommend carrying out a similar test to check the pavement before walking your dog.
