Two Sydney dogs donned their best to say ‘I do’ at a harbour-side wedding ceremony.
The Daily Mail reports that Sherlock, an 18-month old Yorkshire terrier, ‘married’ Tinkerbell, a two-and-a-half-year-old rescue Maltese mix, alongside family and friends at Mary Booth Park in Kirribilli. Speaking to FEMAIL, Sherlock’s owner Lill said the ‘wedding’ between the dogs was planned as a community event about a month ago.
The wedding party was made up of around 30 (human) guests from the local community and about 20 dogs. “Milo the Cavoodle came as the Pope and witnessed the wedding, and Pickles the Pug was the bridesmaid,” she said.
There were also two cakes on offer – a three-tier raw meat and carrot cake by Woof Gateaux and a chocolate fudge layer cake by Masterchef baker Andy Bowdy. Tinkerbell’s owner, Monica told FEMAIL she bought the dress on eBay for $12, and while it was a little tight around the neck and arms, the rest ‘fitted perfectly’.
Lill said those invited to the wedding weren’t expected to bring gifts, and were asked to bring cash instead. She explained the event doubled as a fundraiser for animal welfare charity, RSPCA. “The local dog owners are always getting together,” she said. “We thought something like this would be a bit of fun and a nice way to raise money.”
The wedding raised $200 which will be donated to the animal welfare charity. Monica said the wedding was a lot of fun and she loved every minute of it. “It was just a great way to get together with everyone and have a bit of a laugh and enjoy some champagne and cake. The dogs met each other a year ago and it was clear from the beginning it was love,” said Lill.
“He met Tinkerbell at the park at the end of our street and they just hit it off,’ she told Daily Mail Australia. “Their body language is great and they are just best friends.” Lill said over the past year the dogs have ‘dated’ and outings have included plenty of park walks and the odd gelato. Though there hadn’t been any talk of the dogs marrying, between the owners, it was decided about a month ago that Sherlock would propose.
“We got really lucky, because we had been talking about how to stage photos for this, and we happened to walk past a company who was doing a promotional shoot at Lavender Bay. “They had chairs set up, and a ‘Will you marry me’ sign – Sherlock seized the moment and proposed.”
Both dogs held engagement parties – Sherlock’s was a bow tie bucks’ poker night – while Tinkerbell had a hens’ high tea.
The dogs won’t be living together post-wedding. Lill jokingly said their marriage will be a ‘modern arrangement,’ and both will live separately. “They will probably see each other a couple of times a week,” she concluded.
