Every cat owner has awoken to discover their pet nestled at the foot of the bed - but it appears there's actually an endearing explanation behind this behaviour.
According to one viral video, cats frequently select this spot because it enables them to remain near their owner while simultaneously monitoring the room surrounding them.
The clip, shared by @cats.psy, explains: "By sleeping at your feet, your cat is choosing a position of both safety and protection. They can see the door, stay alert to any sounds, and still be close to you. It's their way of saying, 'I'm watching over you while you sleep.'"
Beyond functioning like a miniature nocturnal guardian, sleeping beside your feet is also thought to represent a significant demonstration of trust.
Cats are at their most defenceless when they sleep, indicating they only completely unwind around people they feel entirely secure with.
The video adds: "Choosing to sleep near you, especially at your feet, means they feel completely safe in your presence."
Certain cats may additionally favour the position because they appreciate the warmth from your body without desiring to be excessively close or hemmed in throughout the night.
