NHS APPROVES TRIAL FOR DOGS DETECTING PROSTATE CANCER
Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men in the UK and every day more than 112 are diagnosed with the disease. With 1 in 3 men missed through current level of tests, Medical Detection Dogs, a charity which works with NHS trusts and universities, has been given approval from Milton Keynes University Hospital for more trials working alongside the charities trained detection dogs. The charity says, “if dogs can sniff prostate cancer from a urine sample the chances are high that from the results of the dogs’ sniffing research, a test can be developed that is far superior to the PSA (prostate specific antigen) test.” Its first study showed specially trained dogs can detect prostate cancer in urine in 93% of cases.
